Backpack vacuums are an efficient way to clean your home fast. They typically weigh less than other canister vacuums, and they are quieter, too. When you carry your vacuum on your back, the only thing you need to worry about is the cord (if there is one). But another handy feature of backpack vacuums is their long cord length.
Although this type of vacuum cleaner isn’t for everyone, it’s a top choice for commercial environments. The best backpack vacuums make it easy to clean floors, furniture, stairs, and overhead, too.

Top Backpack Vacuums
Powr-Flite BP10P Comfort Pro Premium Backpack Vacuum
Powr-Flite’s BP10P backpack vacuum sports a Deuter Aircomfort harness that keeps your back from getting sweaty. Not only does it keep you cool, but it also adjusts to different users of varying heights for maximum comfort. And that’s not all that sets this vacuum apart from the competition.
When Powr-Flite calls this their premium vacuum, they mean it. It’s quieter and yet more powerful than the other backpack vacuum cleaners we reviewed. Even though it has an airflow of 130 cubic feet per minute, it only puts out 62 dB of noise. Plus, it has a water lift of 110 inches. (For an explanation of water lift, look at the bottom of the article.)
This vacuum has the Gold Certification from the Carpet and Rug Institute because of its five-stage filtration system that includes a HEPA filter bag. And of course, it comes with an assortment of attachments and an extension wand to help you clean all around the house. You can store the accessories on the included tool belt.
Hoover Commercial Lightweight Backpack Vacuum, C2401
Hoover’s C2401 backpack vacuum is a commercial model that only weighs 9.2 pounds. Since it’s a professional tool, it comes with a chiropractor-designed harness for all-day comfort. Moreover, its noise output is just 66 dB, lower than other types of vacuum cleaners.
But there’s even more to love about the Hoover backpack vacuum. For example, it has a 48-foot-long power cord to cut down on the need to switch outlets. Next, it has a HEPA filter. And finally, it comes with accessories like a turbo floorhead, a crevice tool, an upholstery tool, and a dusting brush.
Sanitaire EURSC412B Quiet Clean Backpack Lightweight Vacuum
Sanitaire’s Quiet Clean backpack vacuum weighs 11 ½ pounds, and it comes with a 50-foot cord. The disposable dust bag system holds up to 6 quarts of debris. In addition, it has a HEPA air filter to capture and retain allergens as small as 0.3 microns in size.
Although it’s not as quiet as the Hoover vacuum we reviewed above; the Sanitaire is rated at 69 dB of noise which is about average. More importantly, it has the green seal from the Carpet and Rug Institute, plus it meets LEED requirements for air quality in green buildings.
Bissell BigGreen Commercial BG1006 High Filtration Backpack Vacuum
Bissell’s BigGreen commercial backpack vacuum comes with both shoulder straps and waist belt to distribute its weight evenly. It weighs 9 ½ pounds and has a 6-quart collection bag. And since it was designed to operate in professional environments, it has a heat sensor to protect the motor from overloading.
Along with the 50-foot power cord and 4-foot vacuum hose, it comes with an 8-piece tool kit. The kit includes accessories like a brush head for hard floors, a beater attachment for carpets, a crevice tool, and more.
Atrix VACBP1 HEPA Backpack Vacuum with Attachments
The standout feature of the Atrix backpack vacuum is its versatility. It comes with an adapter to turn it into a blower. And it’s actually quite effective as it has an airflow of 106 cubic feet per minute.
Owners report that it’s comfortable to wear as it only weighs 10.3 pounds and comes with shoulder straps and a belt loop. The belt loop has places to hang accessories like the crevice tool or the furniture nozzle. And although it comes with a 6-foot hose and extension wand, it doesn’t have a power cord. You’ll need to supply your own extension cord.
On the other hand, the Atrix vacuum has true HEPA filtration. This includes an 8-quart collection bag, a pre-motor filter, and an exhaust filter. Not only does it pick up dust and pollen, but it also keeps the air smelling fresh.
Rubbermaid Commercial Executive Series Backpack Vacuum Cleaner
The Rubbermaid Executive Series commercial backpack vacuum has an impressive airflow of 110CFM, but it only makes 66 dB of noise. Professionals that use this vacuum also appreciate the adjustable harness that keeps the hot vacuum away from their backs.
Although the base model doesn’t have a HEPA filter, you can purchase HEPA collection bags separately. Additionally, the vacuum comes with aluminum wands, an upholstery brush, a floor tool, a crevice tool, a flexible hose with swivel head, and a 40-foot power cord.
The design and capability of the Rubbermaid vacuum have earned it the Carpet and Rug Institute seal of approval. It also meets the requirements for the LEED certification for green, eco-friendly buildings.
ProTeam Super CoachVac Commercial Backpack Vacuum Cleaner
The ProTeam CoachVac can collect up to 10 quarts of debris. Furthermore, its 4-stage HEPA filter is certified gold for allergen control by the Carpet and Rug Institute. Plus, it’s quieter than conventional vacuums at only 66 dB.
Other highlights of the CoachVac include a 50-foot power cord as well as accessories to clean floors, furniture, curtains, and more. It weighs just 11 pounds and comes with an adjustable harness and tool belt.
GV 10 Quart Commercial BackPack Vacuum
The GV10 backpack vacuum has LED lights to help you see underneath furniture. It comes with an adjustable metal want, a crush-proof hose, and a deluxe floor tool with a motorized brush roller. You can even adjust the height of the roller with a foot pedal.
The vacuum weighs 11 pounds and has an adjustable harness. It holds up to 10 quarts of debris. And it purifies the air while you work with a three-stage HEPA filter system.
Makita XCV05Z 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Backpack Vacuum
If you would prefer to clean without the inconvenience of a power cord, try the Makita cordless backpack vacuum. It operates on the same 18V lithium-ion batteries that power other Makita tools. Moreover, it has a brushless motor for long life and efficient use of battery power.
Don’t expect this cordless vacuum to perform as powerfully as the corded ones in our review. It’s rated for 53CFM which is about half the airflow that the other vacuums have. But it can run up to 90 minutes on low power, or an hour on high. And it only weighs 9.4 pounds with the batteries onboard.
Owners have pointed out that this vacuum is very convenient to use especially since it has a HEPA filter and collection bag. But they also report that the flexible hose is narrow and easily clogged.
BLACK+DECKER BEBL7000 Back Pack Leaf Blower Vacuum and Mulcher
Although the BLACK+DECKER backpack vacuum/leaf blower may not be your first choice for cleaning the house, it can still get the job done. However, it has a 400CFM airflow rating, and it can blast out air in blower mode up to 250mph. As such, it’s really best for yard cleanup.
Instead of a HEPA filter that improves indoor air quality, there is a simple collection bag that’s easy to empty. That’s handy because this leaf vacuum can mulch, too.
A note on airflow and suction
The airflow measurement of a vacuum is one of the best indicators of how much suction it has. It’s usually represented by a number followed by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. To illustrate this point, canister vacuums should have an airflow of at least 100CFM.
Next, sometimes manufacturers specify water lift. This number demonstrates how well the vacuum cleaner performs as its filters load and collection bag fills. It’s especially important when you’re choosing a vacuum with HEPA filtration. In other words, if you want a vacuum with strong suction that will continue to perform well under load, choose one with a water lift of 90 inches or more.
Studies show that backpack vacuum cleaners can cut cleaning time by more than half. If you’re tired of pushing an upright or dragging a canister, try transporting your next vacuum cleaner on your back. Most likely you’ll find that it’s very convenient for cleaning all around the house.
